Re: Austin and Rice surnames
Yes, Austin is a Melungeon name. The males test as having Sub-Saharan African Y chromosome types. They are all the same family. John Austin came out of Virginia/N.C. and married Hannah Love about 1720. Their grandchildren married Blevinses. All were Jewish or crypto-Jewish. Bill Emmet and Charles Au...

Re: Melungeon Skunk Strip/ Stripe
Actually, I have a sort of skunk strip, and my great uncle Melmut Lackey really had a noticeable one. I usually dye mine well. I'm sorry to say I don't know how to post photos here.

Re: Jewish 1 and 3 Alleles
The columns register a hit for that marker which you received from one parent. It's not apparent on the face of it which parent contributed that marker to you if there is only one check mark on a row. But if there are two on a row you can conclude you got that marker from both parents. Remember, how...

Studying Them Melungeons (podcast)
Melungeons are the subject of DNA Consultants' fourth episode of Time Traveler's Suitcase. Pete Ferrand travels to Newmans Ridge, Tennessee, where he witnesses a battle over the definition of the term Melungeon. Reading by Ginger Cuculo of the chapter “Cyberfeud on the Ridge” from Ancestors and Enem...

Re: Possible False Hispanic match if you have NA ancestry
Shari, Did you test again after Feb. 2017, when we added four Armenian populations? Did you get Armenian matches. It is a close question.
