Re: A few family photos
Thanks for posting. Your great grandfather DeLoss Crittenden Ford looks quite Choctaw in my opinion, although a quick search shows Crittenden is usually Cherokee and DeLoss is Kiowa.

Croatans and Croatians
It has long been thought the origin of the Croatan Indians of N.C. lay in the "Lost Colony," which supposedly took refuge with a nearby Croatian colony among the Indians. Do Croatan Indians look Croatian. Here's a comparison between C.D. Brewington, the tribal historian of the Croatan Indi...

Re: Jewish 1 and 3 Alleles
The columns register a hit for that marker which you received from one parent. It's not apparent on the face of it which parent contributed that marker to you if there is only one check mark on a row. But if there are two on a row you can conclude you got that marker from both parents. Remember, how...

Pete Ferrand travels to Newmans Ridge, Tennessee, where he witnesses a battle over the definition of the term Melungeon. Reading by Ginger Cuculo of the chapter “Cyberfeud on the Ridge” from Ancestors and Enem...

Shari, Did you test again after Feb. 2017, when we added four Armenian populations? Did you get Armenian matches. It is a close question.

Re: Athabascan GG Slave VA
Fascinating! Indian slavery was particularly acute among the "Cherokee," who often kept a very pretty female slave as their concubine. It may be one of the sources of the incredible diversity of Cherokee people.

Re: Melungeon were Portuguese (and Portuguese Jewish)
Thanks, Robert for the reference to Joanne Pezzulo's blog about Melungeons being Portuguese. Not to split hairs, but Melungeons could refer to non-Portuguese families, too, while Portuguese could refer to Jews. It was a virtual synonym for Jew in the 17-18 cents. You can find explicit usage like tha...

Re: Melungeon Allele (Arthur-Needham Expedition)
Richard Thornton and others who have read the Arthur-Needham Expedition Report of 1673 think the people with beards and a 6 foot bell down river from the Tamahitans might have been Armenians. He has a whole post about that: https://peopleofonefire.com/from_armenia_with_love.html. Certainly, the Tama...
