We can start at what some might call the beginning, if there is such a moment. Cactus Hill, on the Notto- way River in southeast Virginia, is an archaeological site that challenges a long-held orthodoxy that Indian peo-
ple throughout America rst entered the continent from the west at 10,000 BC, crossing over the Bering Land Bridge into Alaska. Many Native peo- ple have challenged this model, based on their religious beliefs and oral histo- ries regarding migrations.

The artifacts at the site are 5000 years older than the Bering Land Bridge theory would allow. Along with several other contemporaneous sites in the Eastern US
